Household furniture and energy / electricity are now part of our everyday lives. Also new sources of energy are being sought because of the demand for it is increasing in the world around us.

The Caws of Cancer

My animation or short film highlights smoking as one of the causes of cancer. It involves three crows. Two of them were smoking. A third crow called the Professor saw them smoking and advised them of the consequences of their actions which is that smoking can lead to cancer and then death. One crow finally succumbs to the effects of smoking and falls onto the bench and dies. The idea to use birds came from the newspaper article in the Metro-“The Caws of Cancer”. When I read the article I found it to be hilarious. The adverse effects of smoking and cancer have been in the media recently. This and the government policy to ban smoking in public places influenced me to use this topic for my short film.

I’m creating an animation called the misunderstood boy who has a disability-autism. Before I chose this topic I brainstormed and draw a mind map. I then began my research. During my research I looked at several videos in order to develop an idea for my animation. I looked at animations created by students from UCA e.g. one that portrayed a man who was obsessed with Mickey Mouse. I watched Careful, which is about a 7 year old girl who was sent on a mission to post a letter by her controlling mother. Also I looked at the Procrastination (Tales of Mere Existence series), which is about a character dialoging about getting his work done and aspects of life that has been described as hilarious. I then watched Mousecape, which is about being misunderstood and the thought then came to me to develop my animation about being misunderstood.

I chose this idea because it’s an opportunity to show and prove to the audience that meeting people who are acting weird and silly should not be judged in a discriminatory manner before understanding the reason for their actions. I have autism (disability) and I have personal experiences about being misunderstood. I used myself as a character telling a story about being born with autism and having problems and making mistakes before people understood and offered help and support.

My project is to create an animation involving musical celebrities I listen to their music on my MPG4. I researched Nexus Production, watched videos on Youtube about trailers and movies of MTV. I looked at soul train. Soul Train is a syndicated, music-related television program. In it’s 35-year history, the show primarily featured performances by rhythm and blues, soul, and hip-hops artists, also jazz musicians and gospel singers. I have also watched MTV music channel along with MTV+1 base, hits and dance. These inspired me to develop my project. I listened to different types of music I was hoping to obtain music representing the sound of a train. I listened to music of Thomas the Tank Engine-Night Train and the Railway (Train) Music Theme on DVD Extras menu. However I did not find them suitable. Therefore I used music from the celebrity I chose -50 Cent.

On completing my research I chose three celebrities because I liked their music. I listen to their music to relax. However I then reduced the celebrities to one to complete my project because of the deadline. The research also helped me with my ideas for example a train line resembled the notations of music. Therefore I decided to use a train line and the musical notes to represent it.

I then decided to use symbols to depict the particular celebrity e.g. money to represent the celebrity-50 Cent. Having identified the symbols I decided to show the musical notes being transformed into the symbols. I chose a light background to enhance the symbols that I used. At the end the chosen celebrity 50 cent comes alive. The softwares I used were Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, Stop motion, and After-Effects. I ensured that the ‘animated project’ lasted for fifteen seconds.

My Web Design Project

In my web design project I created a website. The theme was “Mutation”. I used a software called Dreamweaver to create my website and Photoshop for making my own pictures and letters.

I used Photoshop to create buttons and pictures for front covers, letters as titles. I saved my Photoshop pictures as “save for web” for gif or jpg.

It didn’t worked well because I had to resize one of the pictures as it was too big and I mixed up my files from different folders.

It worked well because I learned how to use Dream weaver on how to insert pictures, text, tables with rows and columns.

My Group Project

I’m in a group project called ‘Bringing to life’ with Tracey, Joe and Dmitri. We are creating an adaptation of a story “Kapp’s Last Tape”.

We talked about who was working on what. Joe and Dmitri worked on shooting / stop motion and Tracey and I worked on Flash.

I think it went well because we talked and gave our ideas to each other. We discussed what we were supposed to do with our work and it took a few days for us to decide.

Some days we were not able to work together because of sickness, long journeys and other problems.

Line of Action - Animation

During the summer holidays my project was “A Line of Action” - drawing a line of someone throwing a ball that showed movement. I experimented with cricket and tennis but decided to use cricket for my project. I used a drawing tablet and Photoshop to draw the line with different coloured skeletons because it made it simpler to see the black line showing the movement.

Portrait and Place Project : The Regeneration of Lewisham

My idea for the portrait and place project is the “Regeneration of Lewisham”. I discovered that areas around Lewisham were changing. I had taken pictures before the regeneration began and have recently taken more pictures showing the progress. Phase one and two are now completed. Phase three is now being discussed. There appears to be some resistance towards the demolition of the primary school replacing it with a combined primary and a secondary school. The logo used by Lewisham is “Making Lewisham the best place to live, work and learn”.

I researched a few artists who gave me ideas to develop my project. Masayashi Nakano gave me some insight into using the different sites undergoing regeneration in Lewisham. e.g houses, restaurants, train station. Researching Maira Kalman gave me the idea to use mix media of photographs and drawings to enable me to finish within the time frame.

It went very well because I planned which software to use early in the project and which media to use to animate the scenes. I used the pictures of areas around Lewisham from years ago with the recent pictures I took. I decided to choose a few pictures of the new road called Silver Road, the new site of Burger King and Lewisham Train Station.

I used Photoshop and After Effects. I used Photoshop to animate using layers and overlapping the pictures with a mix of drawing and photographs. To animate the scenes I used Photoshop and made many layers to create a character walking into the Burger King and a Taxi Cab driver travelling along the road near the train station. I decided to add in an extra scene of the Gypsy Site before the changes.

I have recorded many sounds around Lewisham. The sound device was small so I needed to get a closer range to obtain the sounds I needed and then I mixed them with other sounds using Soundtrack Pro. I decided to use text and the DVD menu to display the title and to play the animation film. The title screen is “Regeneration of Lewisham” and it ends with a text “Making Lewisham the best place to work, live and learn”.

I experienced difficulty using Flash. When I was importing my drawings and photographs I used the wrong settings. I used Photoshop instead because I realized it was better for film and TV and Flash is for web design. I used After Effects because I was able to import files from Photoshop as JEPG, PNG to put them together.

I forgot the number of frames per second to animate and the instructions. To remember the frames per second and instructions I then decided to type the notes to remind me. I was thinking of using Dragon (I Stop Motion) but it was not possible to use Dragon (I Stop Motion) because I decided that I wanted to use more photographs and drawings to develop my project. I enjoyed this project because it made me more aware of my surroundings.

In this essay It's about how Manga and Anime are reflective of Japanese culture or whether they are completely imaginary not relating to reality. My essay is too long for my blog. So I'll put in the main parts of what I've analyzed and written.

Manga and Anime originated in Japan and have been very popular within the country and worldwide. “All ages can be seen reading Manga during the course of the day in Japan. Therefore reading Manga and watching Anime have become a significant part of daily life for millions of Japanese” (Mark W Mac Williams 1984 page 3) He continues that Manga and Anime attract fans, both Japanese and Western because they are appealing as pleasure commodities inexpensive forms of entertainment to be enjoyed. (Mark W Mac Williams 1984 page 5).

History of Manga

“Manga is described by the Japanese language dictionary called the ‘Kojien’ as- simple, humorous and exaggerated drawing, caricature or social satire, a series of pictures telling a story, comic. The term manga was first coined by Houkusai who was a Japanese artist and print maker of the Edo period. (1603-1867) Edo is today’s Tokyo. He used manga to refer to a collection of drawings intended for art lovers generally and to serve as models for his pupils. In the 20th century it was then used in reference to comics.” (Koyoma Richard 2007 page 6-7). “It is considered to be the Japanese version of comic art. Manga has become a form of expression for the Japanese and has been considered as a popular form of entertainment for a large audience with stories aimed at a wide age range and taste e.g. action, romance, comedy, horror even hardcore erotica. Fig 1-The depiction of animals replacing humans and reading from left to right are apparent. Also depicts animals having fun. Fig 2 show the animals with rosaries in a religious ceremony a monkey in a monastic habit praying to frog instead of Buddha.

Manga is aimed at every type of audience. Children as well as adults show a vibrant interest in them. It reflects the Japanese culture and way of life in that manga generally uses Japanese clothing, painting, cuisine, sports, calligraphy, landscape, religion, beliefs and myths.

Brief History of Anime

Anime is the Japanese version of animation and is therefore known worldwide as Japanese animation. “Anime can be hand-drawn or computer animated. It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercial, and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction.” “Anime began at the start of the 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers experimented with the animation techniques that were being explored in France, Germany, United States and Russia.” The oldest known anime in existence was screened in 1917- is a two minute clip of a samurai trying to test a sword on his target only to suffer defeat. http;//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/anime. The source for the stories used in the majority of anime is manga. Manga’s wide diversity and respectable status in Japan is a very fertile source of stories that can be adapted into anime. The distinctive ‘Large eyes’ style of Japanese animation was invented by Tezuka who was considered as the Hero of Manga. His work can be seen in Astro Boy and Buddha.

Orphen- Hiroshi Watanabe

Another manga which was developed into anime was ‘Orphen’ by the Series director Hiroshi Watanabe. It involves fantasy and dragons that are representative of the Japanese folklore and magic. This again shows Japanese culture in the eyes, the dress, the landscape resembling the Fuji Mountains, the sword, the calligraphy towards the end of the picture.

Another manga into anime was Shin Chan- Usui Yoshito. Manga has been able to present the images to attract both children and adults. Though some of the images have been produced with the influence of the West. The Japanese style and characteristics are apparent. This is a very humorous series.

My idea for the Ani Maidstone trailer is to have an artificial jungle invading the college. I’ve watched a DVD “One Dot Zero” ,“Tyger” by Guilherme Marcondes as my inspiration. “Taiga” is a trailer concerning a tiger that was walking around the city turning it into an artificial jungle and turning people into animals.

I’ve been researching using the Internet, DVD and Library books. I’ve taken pictures of areas inside and outside the college, I have loaded these pictures into my computer and printed them I have also done experimental drawings. The photographs from my camera were not used because of the poor quality. I used pictures from another camera which was of a better quality I drew a storyboard of what my animation would look like. I realized I made a long storyboard which would have used too much time to animate therefore I decided to make a shorter and simpler one from start to finish.

I was in another lesson called "Image and Text'". I met a new teacher named Marc Ellerby. I had fun drawing and I did a very good work. I worked on my mini comic called " School Bullies" It's about how things would be different if I had magical powers. I made my mini comic with the theme "Hybird".

Hybird is a thing made by combining two different elements ,a mixture of fantasy and real life.

In electives I chose the 'Image and Text' lesson. It's all about illustration involves drawing and media. On Monday it started out as an introduction to the unit and presentation of Marc's work. Marc showed me his comic book. In the afternoon I started drawing pictures. I then followed commands to draw a 'Dinosuar and dancing out for a party'.

On Tuesday I brought comic books for a presentation and to discuss a theme. I drew a mini comic with four panels and drew pictures relating to a story about what happens in life. I did a mini comic about my friend. She was cycling down the road and an old lady accidentally walked in front of her.

Analysis of an Animation Film.

I chose an interesting animation film ‘Wallace and Gromit - “The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” to analyze. I’ll examine the shots one by one and frame by frame. I’ll look at different shots - like long shots, close ups, point of view shots. I need to look at sequences that stand out to me and what makes it more interested than others and why I like them.

I’ve watched the DVD of ‘Wallace and Gromit the Curse of the Were-Rabbit’ and I liked it because it’s funny, enjoyable and entertaining. It also stimulates the imagination.

Last year I was working on an animation project called ‘The Naming Game’. It’s about names of people, things and others. I obtained information from a website called ‘ Baby Names World’ and several books. I realized many names have meanings but some don’t. I decided to use a person's name to develop my game I made a game that is interactive mixed with Flash and I Stop Motion. I realized it was complicated and I needed help to finish this work. My tutor assisted me.

I created my character which was formed into letters of my name as the main character.

In this game the character showed that names come from different countries and it shows the meaning of the name. It was a guessing game that enabled the viewer to guess the correct name.

I’ve watched Max Fleischer’s animations Popeye, Betty Boop and KoKo the Clown. When I watched another Betty Boop video it stated that It was banned because of the use of Drugs in 1934. At first I don’t believe it but it appears to be true and I realized why some of Betty Boop cartoons were not available.

When I was working on my essay I chose question 3 which was to discuss and analyze the work of two animators Max Fleischer and Paul Driessen looking at their styles and techniques, also their use of drawings as a dynamic form in their animation. In particular I am going to look at Max Fleischer cartoon ‘Popeye’ and Paul Driessen’s film ‘3 Misses’ because their styles are very different.

"Home on the Rails"

'Air'

Paul is famous for using horizontal lines. He uses it in the film ‘Air’ e.g.. Fig 3 it’s use is to emphasize the character and the scene he is portraying. The horizontal line helps to emphasize passivity in the bird. The bird appears to accept his fate before he dies. The horizontal line is shown with the bird perched on it looking downward with a sad expression. His blob like drawing is apparent. In figure 4 the fishes are trevelling towards the line gasping for air before they die. Paul is famous for his suspense.

This was a group project I worked with Tracey, Demitri and Aaron. We read the poems and chose 'Star and Chain' to adapt into a storyboard. We spilt up the tasks between the group. I worked mainly on backgrounds.

After looking at different groups storyboards we had to chose another story to adapt.

My first animation- The Aeroplane Crash

This is the first animation I've made, it's about an aeroplane crash. I used I Stop Motion and did lots of drawing and planning in my storyboard. I think it was a interesting idea about Phobias. It did turn out the way I planned it and I'm pleased with it.

The problems I had was trying to get the running and walking movement right. I looked at pictures in books, on the internet and also people in real life, then tried to figure out which camera angles I should use.

On the scene when the girl was running away from the burning plane I made a mistake with the camera as you can see the peg bar, but on the big screen you can not see it. Sorry about that.

When I was a child I enjoyed watching cartoons and animation. It brings back happy memories. I love the opening sequences and the theme tunes of Mysterious of Cities of Gold, Ulysses 31, Thundercats, Ducktales, Batman and lots more.
